Socotra (Arab. سقطرى‎‎) — the archipelago from four islands and two rocks in the Indian Ocean at the coast of Somalia, approximately in 350 km to the South from Arabian Peninsula. Three manned islands (Socotra, Abd-el-Kuri and Samkh), the desert island of Dars, and also the rock Sabuniya and Kal-Firaun are a part of the archipelago. The total area of the archipelago — 3796 km ². The archipelago is part of the governorate Hadramaut of Yemen. It is territorially divided into two "mudiriya" (area): Hadibo (with an administrative center in the city of the same name) and Kalansiya and Abd-el-Kuri (with an administrative center in the city of Kalansiya).

Here already some millions of years the archipelago of Socotra is isolated from the continent. During this time on local islands it was created unique animal and flora, for what they often are called as Galapagossami of the Indian Ocean. 37% from 825 species of plants, 95% of land mollusks, 90% of reptiles and 70% of the birds living here don't meet more anywhere in the world. A symbol of the archipelago is the endemic draconian tree. It received the name because of allocated from the damaged sites of bark of pitch of red color which possesses medicinal properties and which in the ancient time was associated with "drakony blood". Endemic geckoes and nonpoisonous snakes are distinguished from reptiles, the only radical mammals are bats and shrews, and goats, sheep, cows, camels and donkeys were delivered by the ships from different corners of Earth.

Locals - soсotry - are also unique, they are descendants of mixed marriages of the Arabs, Indians, Ethiopians, Greeks, Portuguese, Somalis and British, during the different periods of time arriving to the archipelago. Soktoriytsa have own language - Socotra, belonging to ancient Semitic group of languages. It is considered that first who visited the archipelago, were the southern Arabian tribes, there was it in 1 millennium BC. Seven centuries later on islands Greeks got, and by the beginning of our era, also Indians lived here. In 1507 Portuguese tried to seize the island, however their attempt wasn't crowned with success. Since the end of 1886 up to 1967 the archipelago of Socotra was part of the British East protectorate Aden. Today Socotra is a part of the republic Yemen. The archipelago of Socotra has been included in UNESCOs World Heritage list since 2008 by number 1263 for its biological diversity and threatened species.
